MOBILE DEVICE MANAGEMENT
A Great Story to Make You Run Away in Fright!
No, I mean fright all right. . .
John had been with his company for several years, but had been promoted to its top IT position two months before. Our meeting was designed to discuss network security, but John couldn’t get his mind off mobile devices. The cell phone bill sitting on the corner of his desk was a good three to four inches tall. The dollar figure he needed to sign-off on made it seem a whole lot taller. John had no idea how to get a handle on all of the devices billing, but he knew he had a problem. “I flipped through this stack this morning,” he said, “hoping to get a feel for what we had billing.” He did. He spotted a cell phone number he used to call often and knew very well. “There it was,” he said, “It just jumped off the page at me.” At first John figured Lee’s cell phone number must have been reassigned internally when Lee left the company a couple of years back. He was going to move on but the coincidence of spotting that one number, in the middle of a bill that thick, tugged at him. “Finally,” he related, “I decided to just call it to see who had it now.” John says he almost fell off his chair when Lee answered with “Hey John. How you doing, buddy? It’s been a long time!”
What’s hidden in your stack of bills?
Would Secrets Emerge?
Is there pocket money hidden in there?
How can you get control of this?
- How valuable would it be to have access to a database that’s current relative to every device, every plan and every user?
- Would it be valuable to be able to do one click to order a device or devices for a new hire or to terminate or redirect all services for someone leaving the company? That’s routine in the MDM world.
- But how about the data itself?
- What if a device gets lost? Your company data is still on it.
- How do you address that today?
- MDM has the answer. You can remotely lock down a device so now one can access it until it’s back in your hands or you can wipe it completely from afar. MDM offers easy-to-use, total device management services with levels of data security a lot of businesses increasingly need.
More . . .
Once upon a time not so long ago a lot of companies were challenged just to keep track of their mobile phones – Who was assigned what number? What phone did they have? Does it need to be upgraded? Are they on the right plan, with the right carrier? When is the contract ready to be renewed? And, oh yeah, did we remember to turn the service off when someone left the company? hose were the good old days. Today, it isn’t so much cell phone administration.
Considering the plethora of devices with their own data plans, today it’s about mobile device management. And unless you work for the unique company where managing those devices is your full time job, by the time you get above 50-75 devices, you have an impossible job and your company is bleeding money somewhere. It’s one thing to have someone come in and perform a little cost containment work to get you back on track, but how long does it take for the mess to re-materialize once they leave?
Mobile Device Management isn’t so much about smart phones, iPhones, tablets and/or other devices and it isn’t so much about finding the best carrier anymore either. The carrier touting the best option for some in the organization may not have the best option for all. Getting the plans and carriers aligned to the users is called “Optimization”.
Optimization is easy and it is generally net cost neutral in the sense that you only pay a percentage of what you save for the service. The trick is making sure you stay Optimized month after month.
